Thyroid
dysfunction may be a mystery, but many of the answers are now
ready to hand. Author Mariëtte Chippindall was Mrs South Africa
in 2005 and Mrs Commonwealth in 2006, but now she is an advocate
for women’s health and the author of The Hidden Epidemic: My
Journey to Thyroid Health.Jenna Clifford, who hosted the
launch of this new book promoting women’s health in her elegant
jewellery store in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, praised the
author for putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
A
glamorous crowd received red carpet treatment at Jenna Clifford
Design Jewellers, where fresh flowers bobbed in the sparkling
water feature and rose petals were strewn underfoot. The author
thanked everybody, including the team at Oshun, who had made the
book a reality. She also introduced her family to the audience,
acknowledging their support that enabled the book’s writing. She
raved about the co-operation and contribution of her co-author,
Marie Opperman.
Brent Murphy, a research and development pharmacist, who wrote a chapter in the book, reminded all in the audience how important it was to realise that your own health is your responsibility. He said, “With the availability of the internet and intelligent thinking, you can empower yourself about health matters. Don’t be afraid to shop around until you find the correct doctor, or the best team, as no single doctor can offer the solution. A gynaecologist offers one viewpoint of a disease, whereas a specialist endocrinologist offers another understanding of the same disease.”

When
it comes to thyroid disease, there are a range of seven
different tests available for diagnosis, but most doctors only
use two. “Results can present as normal unless complete testing
is done and readers are encouraged to continue seeking help
until they find a solution. Read this book, investigate, look,
research and read some more!”
The highlight of the evening was the
award to the author of a Jenna Clifford original trophy by the
pharmaceutical company Solal Technologies, with the inscription:
You are not only a beauty queen with a crown, Mariëtte, you
are also an angel with a Halo.
